Not too terribly long ago, Nikki and I started down a new creative path. After years in the fashion industry and a segue into narrative film I find myself venturing down the photographic path once again, but this time with my partner right at my side. Nikki and I have been busy! We started model testing again a little bit ago, and even built our own studio. Everything that we have shot in the last few months has been entirely on film, and processed in our home lab.
It’s difficult to talk about film, and the photographic process without coming off as somewhat pretentious. Here’s my attempt though! There is something really special about film as a medium over digital. Notably, the way shadows fall. Shadows on film tend to have a smoother roll off. Good, professional film stock is just as sharp as digital and has appropriate grain. There is also something special to be said about the entire process. The ability to correctly meter light, understand where it will hit and how, capture it – and then develop the film yourself is nothing short of magic. Having that hand on control over the process is unparalleled.
On another note, I just love working with Nikki. Nikki and I started our relationship working together, and I always thought she was the coolest person I had ever met. I never dreamed that years later we would wind up in a relationship and continue on this amazing journey together, hand in hand.
